For the 2020 Randwick Secret Garden, we transformed a dated, unusable space into a private, social retreat, integrating thoughtful design elements and sustainable practices to maximise space and enhance the family’s enjoyment.
Scope of Work
For the Randwick Secret Garden, the following tasks were undertaken:
Site Assessment and Planning:
We assessed the space, focusing on existing levels and privacy issues. Our goal was to design a functional garden for the family, while ensuring the layout complemented the contemporary architecture and provided a harmonious flow.
Design, Planting, and Installation:
The design focused on simplifying the layout and addressing privacy concerns. We levelled out multiple elevation changes, creating a cohesive and functional space. Key features included custom bench seating to maximise sunlight, a small turf area, and raised garden beds made from reused sandstone blocks. A laser-cut screen provided privacy, while soft geometric details tied in with the home’s modern aesthetic. Plants like Frangipani, Native Ginger, and Strobilanthes added texture, fragrance, and vibrant colour.
Clean Up:
Post-construction, our team ensured the garden was tidy and fully functional. We cleared all construction debris, finalised the installation of plants, and ensured that all design elements, from the bench seating to the new garden beds, were perfectly in place.
Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability was a priority for the Randwick Secret Garden. We reused sandstone blocks found on site, minimising waste and reducing costs. Plant selection was made with an emphasis on low-maintenance, drought-tolerant species suited to the local climate, ensuring long-term sustainability and minimal environmental impact.
Outcome
The Randwick Secret Garden transformed from a cramped, dated space into a bright, functional outdoor area. The combination of custom seating, reimagined landscaping, and strategic planting created a private, inviting retreat that perfectly balances form and function. The new turf area offers a playful space for the family, while the raised garden beds and modern design details give the garden an appealing, contemporary finish.
