For the 2018 Coogee project, we designed a robust, low-maintenance garden with an “Australian Cottage” vibe—perfect for entertaining family and friends while capturing the essence of laid-back coastal living.
Scope of Work
For the Coogee project, the following tasks were undertaken:
Site Assessment and Planning:
We assessed the space to ensure it would meet the client’s needs for both entertaining and relaxation. The garden design focused on achieving a relaxed, textured aesthetic that would feel like a natural extension of the home, while minimising maintenance.
Design, Planting, and Installation:
The design embraced free-flowing garden beds with an eclectic mix of coastal plants. Curved custom bench seating made from Cumaru was positioned to maximise the afternoon sun, offering a perfect spot for relaxation. To enhance the “Australian Cottage” feel, we used crushed granite to soften the hardscape, complemented by a variety of hardy plants like Olive Trees, Blue Chalk Sticks, and Cotton Lavender. The colours and textures in the plant palette were chosen to evoke calm, with blue and grey hues featured throughout.
Clean Up:
After installation, the site was meticulously cleaned, removing any debris from the construction process. We made final adjustments to ensure all elements—plantings, seating, and features—were well-placed and the garden was ready for immediate use.
Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability was a key consideration for the Coogee project. We prioritised low-maintenance plant selections, many of which are native or suited to coastal environments. The use of crushed granite as a base material helped reduce the need for high-maintenance lawn areas, while durable materials like Cumaru ensured long-lasting functionality.
Outcome
The Coogee project transformed a standard yard into a multi-layered, textured outdoor retreat. The combination of custom seating, coastal plantings, and thoughtful hardscaping created a functional yet aesthetically pleasing garden that encourages relaxation and outdoor entertaining. The space provides a tranquil setting perfect for both family gatherings and quiet moments of enjoyment.
